Tha newspaper was launched at the Gateway of India by Vilasrao Deshmukh, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Abhishek Bachchan on 2005-05-29. Mumbai Mirror was launched by The Times Group after Hindustan Times and DNA announced plans to enter the Mumbai market. The Times of India published a story in its business section which said that it had a circulation of 1.5 lakhs while Mid-day's circulation had dropped to 1.24 lakhs. This led to a counter attack by MiD DAY claiming that Mumbai Mirror was an "Unqualified flop according to industry sources".
